Many consider the Driveway Series the ideal place to start and/or learn about bicycle racing. While this is true in many regards, in 2014 we noticed that the large field sizes often made the races more intimidating for beginners. Intimidation leads to apprehension. Apprehension leads to anxiety. Anxiety leads to distraction. Distraction leads to a poor experience. Poor experiences lead to disinterest. To combat this and help would be racers learn and race more often we had the idea of providing mentors.
At first the mentor program was simply a seasoned veteran racer riding at the back of the field and coaching any rider who wanted to sit near the back of the group and receive instruction. Mentors helped with choosing good lines through turns, when to shift gears, and basic pack dynamics. We quickly realized that the mentors could serve multiple purposes, providing both coaching and encouragement to racers but also, by riding with a radio in their back pocket, speed up communication with race officials, race staff, and our on-site medical team.
Since 2014 the program has grown. Now all races have mentors at the back. In the advanced races the mentors serve mostly for increased communication. For 2019 the mentor program is sponsored by Murff BADA.
